By wasting activated sludge via a hydrocyclone a continuous selection of
heavier particles takes place, resulting in better sludge settleability (lower SVI-
values). Heavier particles (the underflow of the cyclone) are returned to the
aeration tank, lighter particles (the overflow of the cyclone) are actually wasted
as waste activated sludge to sludge treatment.
Bio-P bacteria are generally heavier compared to other bacteria found in
activated sludge systems. The hydrocyclone therefore simultaneously ensures
improved selection of bio-P bacteria, resulting in enhanced biological phosphate
removal.
