ATEX Inspection at RWZI Groesbeek by InProces Advies B.V.

InProces Advies B.V. conducted an ATEX inspection for Waterschap Rivierenland at RWZI Groesbeek. This site is running a pilot project with a powdered activated carbon installation designed to remove pharmaceutical residues from wastewater. However, this installation introduces a new risk: explosion hazards.

An explosive atmosphere can occur both inside and outside the installation. The lower explosive limit (LEL) for activated carbon powder is approximately 20 g/m³, a concentration that can be easily reached during pneumatic transport or when accumulated dust is disturbed. Therefore, ATEX measures must be considered both in the design of the installation and in its operational use. This includes selecting appropriate components and instruments, ensuring risk visibility, and implementing clear work protocols in high-risk zones.

NEN-EN 1127-1 identifies various ignition sources, with electrical components being almost always present. Electrical components used in zoned areas must comply with specific protection classes, and improper installation or damage must not compromise their safety.

An ATEX inspection following NEN-EN-IEC 60079-17 is essential to verify that the installation is safe and that the implemented technical measures are effective. This inspection assesses whether the electrical components match the zoning requirements and uses measurements to confirm adequate bonding, among other factors.

As this was a new installation, a detailed inspection was conducted according to a predefined inspection plan. In addition to verifying the suitability of the chosen components, field checks ensured proper installation and connection.

The clear and effective communication with Waterschap Rivierenland resulted in a smooth collaboration. After just a few adjustments, the installation was approved, and the 60079-17 inspection was successfully completed.
