We are using more and more medicines in the Netherlands. The medical residues end up in the sewer via urine and faeces and finally in the surface water. We must act now to prevent major problems in the future. To reduce the impact of medical residues on the environment, cooperation is needed to improve nature and water quality and contribute to a more sustainable Netherlands.
Currently all wastewater from hospitals and health centers goes via the sewer to sewage treatment plants, to treat and purify the water before it ultimately ends up in our surface water. However, the treatment is in general not removing a sufficient number of medical residues before it is discharged into surface water. The Nijhuis MediOxi solution (in collaboration with Van Remmen UV Technology) ensures that medical residues will be removed in a cost-effective and decentral way at the hospital or health center in order to improve the water quality for humans and animals.
